Osirium @ Pycon: Ed Reveals the Patterns in our Pit of Success

Osirium's Ed Sharp speaking at PyCon

Here’s Ed Sharp our Engineering Manager holding court about the patterns of development. His session was at PyCon on Thursday 26th October. It was a case of standing room only.

Not all patterns are good, so Ed’s presentation covered how we identify the good from the bad. In particular how the choice of good boundaries for Functions and API’s can reduce the cognitive load on developers.

Ed outlined why a continual focus on the short-term becomes increasingly counterproductive. He discussed useful examples of how mid-term goals and long-term strategic aims could inform the structure and quality of code being authored right now.

There followed some insightful questions about the onboarding process for new staff (commit on the first day, elegance is not optional) and how the software release process was handled.

Ed closed by reminding those present that we’re hiring!
