9.5. Configure meta-info

This chapter explains how meta-columns can be created and applied to manage users, devices and profiles pages. The following topics are covered:

9.5.1. Adding meta-columns

Our recommendation is to add meta-columns before you start configuring users, devices and profiles on your system.

Meta-columns give you the flexibility to attach your own specific data to users, devices and profiles, allowing you to better organise and label your data to align with your business naming conventions, departments and organisational structure.

Meta-columns can then be used to group information, make searches easier within the Web Management Interface or the PxM Client, and ensure the correct user or device is added to a profile.

Meta-columns also provide a more efficient way to run tasks on devices. For example, by creating a “Team” meta-column and populating it with the names of your company teams (such as Development, Marketing, etc.), you can restrict scheduled backup tasks to only run on the devices of necessary teams.

Type Benefits
User

Adding meta-columns to the Manage users page allows you to group your users so they can be easily:

  • searched for by specific values, e.g. Team, Manager, Department.
  • added to user groups using searches on meta-column values.
  • identified as belonging to a specific group to ensure everyone in a specific team is given the access levels to devices.
Devices

Adding meta-columns to the Manage devices page allows you to group your devices so they can easily:

  • be identified by specific values, e.g. Location, Team that manages it, application owner, department, customer it is used by, etc.
  • used by the Device Group Separation Identifier.
  • be identified as belonging to a specific group when adding devices to profiles, ensuring the right devices are allocated to the correct teams.
Profiles

Add meta-columns to the Manage profiles page allows you to group profiles so they can be easily:

  • identified as belonging to a specific group, team or department.
  • searched to ensure changes are made to the right profile groups.
