Installing the PxM MAP Server

This section covers:

PxM MAP Servers are an extension of the PxM Virtual Appliance* and are used to manage connections to centrally hosted thick management applications and web based applications

The benefits of using a PxM MAP Server include:

  • Dependencies are centralised and not local to the users workstation.

  • Upgrades and the maintenance of management tools can be centrally managed.

  • Allows multiple versions of an application to co-exist with connections automatically routed to the correct PxM MAP Server.

  • Grouping PxM MAP Servers allows connections to specific tools or a selection of tools with connections being round-robined to spread the load within the group of PxM MAP Servers.

The PxM MAP Server application is installed on a Windows Server which is then controlled by the PxM Platform, allowing remote applications to be launched from the PxM Client.

The PxM MAP Server installer (MSI) file contains the following components:

  • MAP service launcher: the program running the remote application when the application is opened through the PxM Client.

  • AutoIT application: manages the AutoIT scripts used by PxM to connect and talk to specific devices.

  • MAP service APIs: used to communicate with the PxM Platform. A shared secret is used to secure the communication.

  • PxM-RT: enables multiple user connections from the PxM Platform to the Windows Server.

The PxM Platform is made up of the following components:

PxM Components

Component Description
PxM Virtual Appliance Main component which drives the PxM Platform. It incorporates the virtual appliance, database, and Web Management Interface.
The PxM Virtual Appliance is packaged for deployment as either a OVA or VHD file.
PxM Client Allows Superadmins to access the Web Management Interface to manage and configure the PxM Platform and allows users to single sign onto devices and run device tasks.
The PxM Client is included in the PxM Virtual Appliance and can be downloaded for installation on either Windows or macOS workstations.
PxM MAP Server Enables remote applications to be launched from the PxM Client.
The PxM MAP Server software is installed on a 64-bit Microsoft Windows Server 2016 along with the management applications.

Firstly you will need a PxM Virtual Appliance to add your PxM MAP Server to once it has been installed and configured.

The PxM MAP Server requires the following:

  • Min 4 CPU cores.
  • Min 16 GB RAM.
  • ‘Fast’ disk.
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 or higher.
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2.
  • Installation of management applications.

Legal notices and messages of the day should be turned off. Instead, you can use the Session recording terms of use which can be set through the Web Management Interface. See Administrators Guide for instructions on how this can be set.

The licence requirements for adding PxM MAP Servers into your PxM Platform need to be included in your main licence which is uploaded through the Web Management Interface.

On the System configuration > Licencing tab of the Web Management Interface you can check if your current licence allows PxM MAP Servers to be added and the maximum number that can be added for use.
