Deploying and configuring the PxM Virtual Appliance

There are a number of stages involved in deploying and configuring the PxM Virtual Appliance. The workflow below gives you an overview of the steps required to successfully complete your installation.

Deploying the PxM Virtual Appliance

Deployments into the supported infrastructures vary. Click on the infrastructure you are deploying into to view the correct deployment steps.

Setup and configuration

Once the PxM Virtual Appliance has been successfully deployed into your infrastructure you will need to run through the setup and configuration.

  1. On the new virtual appliance open the console window of the PxM Virtual Appliance.

  2. Within the open Console window, press ENTER when prompted. Enter setup

  3. Read and accept the EULA to continue. eula

  4. Within the Configure networking screen, configure the following virtual appliance settings. Press TAB to navigate between the fields.

    • IP Address: Enter the IP Address which will be used to connect to the virtual appliance.
    • Netmask: Enter the network mask.
    • Gateway: Enter the network default gateway IP address.
    • Primary DNS: Enter the network primary DNS IP address.
    • (Secondary DNS): Enter the secondary DNS IP address if relevant, else leave blank. configure networking
  5. Once completed TAB down to the OK button and press ENTER.

  6. Within the Enter a hostname window, enter a name to identify the new PxM Virtual Appliance. hostname

  7. TAB down to the OK button and press ENTER.

  8. Wait while the system is configured. When prompted, press ENTER to Continue without restoring a backup. continue without

  9. TAB down to the OK button and press ENTER.

  10. Set a password for the new primary superadmin account. The username (superadmin) and the password will be used later to login to the PxM Client. superadmin password

  11. TAB down to the OK button and press ENTER.

  12. Confirm the new primary superadmin account password.

  13. TAB down to the OK button and press ENTER.

  14. Your Master Encryption Key will be shown. MEK

    Type Description
    Master encryption key This key is VERY IMPORTANT make a note of it and securely store it externally for future reference as it is not stored within the PxM Platform. It will be required during a backup/restore procedure to recreate the hash file and decrypt the PxM Platform database stored within the backup file. See PxM Virtual Appliance backup and restore guide.
    Salt During the installation process the master encryption key is combined with the Salt to generate a hash which is stored in a file.
    The Salt is stored on the PxM Virtual Appliance and will be included in the backup file.
    Hash Is generated during the installation process and stored on the PxM Virtual Appliance.
    The hash file will not be included in the backup file. During a backup/restore procedure the master encryption key will be used with the salt to recreate the hash and decrypt the backup database file to reinstate the PxM Virtual Appliance.
  15. Enter the Master Encryption Key including the dashes to verify.

  16. TAB down to the OK button and press ENTER.

  17. Once the setup is complete the following message will be displayed in the Osirium Console window. Make a note of the https virtual appliance address. Console window

  18. The installation is now complete and you can proceed to the initial configuration which is the final stage.

Initial configuration

Once the PxM Virtual Appliance has been successfully installed and configured, you will need to log on using the PxM Client and upload a valid licence to get started.

  1. The installation steps will differ depending on whether you are using a Windows or macOS operating system on your workstation. For PxM Client installation instructions see PxM Client guide

  2. Open the PxM Client and login.

    • Address: HTTPS PxM IP address
    • Username: superadmin
    • Password: Primary superadmin password, set during the setup and configuration process


    You may be required to confirm the PxM Virtual Appliance Host key fingerprint is correct before continuing, which can be found on the PxM Client download page.

  3. Once successfully logged into the client you will be presented with the PxM Client interface, double-click Browser (HTTP) under Osirium Server.

  4. The Web Management Interface will open in a browser window. You will be prompted to upload a valid PxM licence before you can start using the PxM Platform. Click Choose File and select the licence file provided by Osirium.

  5. Click Upload.

  6. Click Acknowledge within the Action notifications window. Your browser will now be refreshed and you are ready to start.

  7. Your PxM Virtual Appliance is now ready. The Welcome to the PxM Platform page provides a quick guide to the steps required to start using the PxM Platform.
